The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival or Double Fifth Festival, is one of the traditional Chinese festivals celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year. Its origin can be traced back to ancient China, when it was established as a festival to commemorate the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a politician and poet from the state of Chu during the Warring States period. He was loyal to his country and loved his people, but was slandered and ostracized in the officialdom. He ultimately chose to jump into the river and ended up becoming a legendary figure. According to legend, after Qu Yuan jumped into the river, people rowed boats on the water to search for his body. To prevent fish and shrimp from nibbling at his body, they threw food and realgar wine into the water. Afterwards, every year on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, people commemorate Qu Yuan by racing dragon boats, eating zongzi (rice dumplings wrapped in leaves), and drinking realgar wine in his memory.
